Bringing The Fire - Bray Jazz Workshop

Danish trio 'The Firebirds', whose presentation at this year's festival will feature a jazz reinterpretation of well known works of classical music, will host a workshop on Friday afternoon, 28th April, that will explore how their project has successfully brought classical composition into a jazz context.

firebirds440Just as great composers like Igor Stravinsky drew inspiration from folk songs and melodies to create their timeless classics, ‘The Firebirds’ take classical music as the jumping off point for a repertoire of groove-laden jazz improvisation.

The trio, which is named after one of Stravinsky’s best-known works, will demonstrate, discuss and deconstruct techniques and approaches that have enabled the music of composers such as Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, and Rimskij-Korsakov to be reinterpreted in different styles - jazz, surf, free improvisation and blues included.

The workshop, which sponsored by Music Generation Wicklow, will be relevant and of interest to those schooled not alone in jazz, but also in classical, traditional and rock music, and is free to attend.

'The Firebirds' band leader Stefan Pasborg, the son of professional ballet dancers with The Royal Danish Ballet, will also provide an insight into how a Danish boy who was reared surrounded by classical music would carve his own future as one of Europe's most accomplished jazz drummers.
